Your
academic advisor in college is very similar to your school counselor in high
school. This person will help you plan out your course of study. They are also
part of your support system while in college. If you’re having a difficult time
with a certain class, they may be able help you identify the problem and assist
you in seeking help. It’s very important to keep in touch with your academic
advisor, there are times when course requirements for a certain program of
study change and they will be able to notify you of this change and how it will
affect your academic plan.
Please
schedule an appointment with your academic advisor. Don’t expect them to be
available at all times, some of them teach or have research hours. During your
meeting with your academic advisor you can voice any concerns that you have or
provide feedback. Your advisor might also give you insight on departmental
scholarships or internship opportunities.
Last but not
least, read all your emails. Not just emails from your academic advisor. Check
all of your college emails. This is how the Financial Aid Office, Billing
Office, Office of Student Affairs, and your professors will communicate with
you. Make sure you’re on top of everything.
