Looking Back - Thoughts & Reflections on Preparing for Life After High School

Sometimes it is funny how life works out. My parents get a good laugh when they compare my high-school self to my adult-self. As a high school student, it was like pulling teeth trying to get me to touch anything with the words “Financial Aid” or “Scholarships.” I am now helping students and families across the state of Iowa with financial aid and scholarships.

Looking back at my 18-year old self, I wish I would have listened to my parent’s advice more than I did. My dad always encouraged me to take part in filling out my FAFSA and other financial documents to help me better understand my financial situation. In high school, I was more concerned about my hair and cheering on the next football game.  Why do I care about financial aid? When in reality, I wish that I would have been paying attention to these things and taking part in everything my high-school had to offer me.

ICAN services are free of charge to students and families. I encourage students to take part in learning how to fill out their own FAFSA as it will eventually pertain to them! I also encourage students to try and attend any ICAN related events- such as Financial Aid Nights. You can always utilize our website to figure out when these events are. Our website is: www.icansucceed.org. Our website has tons of great resources for students and families.

To learn more about our next upcoming event click visit our online calendar - www.icansucceed.org/events. We also have some online programs coming up that you can stream live from any device.
