Campus Visits

Thinking of taking a college visit soon? If not, give it some consideration. I always encourage students to visit multiple schools, and definitely multiple types of schools to have a basis for comparison of your options. If you aren’t sure what to ask on a visit, here are a few to help get you started. Also, check out our College Visit Checklist to help guide you through this process.

On Academics:

· What is the average class size of introductory classes?

· What is the average class size of upper-division courses?

· How widely used are teaching assistants on your campus?

· How much time do students typically spend on homework?

On Student Life:

· What activities are offered to students?

· What clubs do you have on campus?

· Do most students go home on the weekends?

· What percentage of students lives on campus?

On Financial Aid:

· What is your average financial aid package?

· What is the average merit award?

· What work-study opportunities are there?

· What is the average college debt that students leave with?

The best way to set up a campus visit is to give the college a call and see what your options are. If you can work it in between now and the end of the school year, that would be ideal. Summer visits are sometimes easier for you and your parents’ schedules, but if you can get on a college campus when students are on campus you’ll get a better feel for what your experience might be like at the school.
