This is the time of year when high school seniors are applying to colleges and attempting to maximize their scholarship opportunities. When I review institutional scholarships online, they often look like complicated math formulas. Instead of stressing-out over trying to figure out scholarship eligibility requirements on your own, you can save a lot of research time and energy by contacting college admission counselors directly. Below are some potential questions to ask. More importantly, find your admission counselor, who will gladly assist you with any questions that you might have about college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid.

1. Am I eligible for any automatic scholarships based on my application credentials?

2. Can I increase my current scholarship level by improving my application credentials (GPA & ACT test score)?

3. When is the last date I can retake the ACT test for scholarship purposes?

4. Are there any other scholarships or programs (Honors, for example) that I might be eligible to apply for? If so, how can I apply?

5. If I receive a local or private scholarship, how do I report that to your institution, and how could it impact my financial aid?

6. How will my high school dual-credit and AP classes be assessed, and how could they impact my college schedule?

7. What student employment opportunities are available if I qualify for Federal Work Study?

8. Are there employment opportunities available if I don’t qualify for Federal Work Study?

9. Who can help me interpret my Financial Aid Award letter and payment options?
