September is Library Card Sign up Month

If you don’t have a library card yet, what are you thinking?! Your local library has so many on-site and virtual resources you can use year round.

Some of the things you can take advantage of if you have a library card:

  • Obviously you can check out books, but you can also check out their e-books.
  • You can check out or stream movies online.
  • You can access to old newspapers and magazines in case you need them for research for an essay or school project.
  • Aside from renting movies and books you can also check out baking pans. My library has a section that has cake pans for every occasion: birthdays, holidays, cartoons etc. Another library close to my home also lets you rent art. You can rent painting or drawings from local artists. This is awesome for people who like to change their home décor often.
  • Some libraries offer very useful workshops for free. A few that come to mind are career building skills, how to compile a resume, study skills, writing labs. My local library hires a professional photographer once a year to take professional headshots that can be used for social media accounts such as Linked-In.
  • Libraries offer really cool summer reading programs.
  • Libraries also have clubs that students can take part in. Such as anime club, video game club, scrapbooking club among many others.
I’ve only mentioned a fraction of what libraries can offer, but I hope this encourages you to get a library card if you don’t have one and start using your library.
