Tips for Online Learning

As I sit in my home office reflecting on all that 2020 has brought us, I am reminded of our resiliency. What a year it has been for so many! As we head into the Fall and the changing of seasons, I am reminded that life is a lot like the Fall leaves- it is constantly changing! If 2020 as taught us anything, I think it has taught us that most of life is out of our control.

Many students may find themselves in an ever-changing situation this school year. Some students have started back to school normally. Where others, are learning virtually. We recognize this change can be extremely difficult. My hope is to try and give some helpful tips for students who are embarking on a new journey of online learning.

Tip #1- Hold Yourself Accountable. It is up to you to show up for class on time, turn in homework assignments when due, etc. The only person accountable for you, is YOU!

Tip #2- Treat an online course the same as an in-person course. Even though you are not physically sitting in a classroom, treat your online course as if you are. Keep distractions to a minimum. I recommend not having your cell phone near you as you learn. Make sure to attend your online course in a quiet and designated study area.

Tip #3- Create a Regular Study Schedule. I recommend creating a study schedule for yourself. Perhaps, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you study Math and Science. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you designate study time for Language Arts, History and Foreign Language. Creating a regular study schedule will help you to stay on track. It is also important to know your learning style. Are you an auditory learner? Do you learn by listening? Are you a reading/writing learner? Do you learn best by writing down notes, reading them and re-writing notes? Are you a visual learner? Do you learn best by creating diagrams and maps? Learning how to study is an important part of not only high school, but beyond!

Tip #4: Take Breaks & Stay Active! You do not want to burn yourself out at the beginning of the school year. Make sure you are getting up once every hour. Studies have proven time after time how important this is! This really helps to re-set your mind and focus. It is also great for your body to get up and move. Perhaps, this means taking a quick walk around your house or block. Find ways to stay active. This helps with your mental focus! It also keeps you active and healthy.

Tip #5: Get your rest! I am sure you have heard this from your Mother several times. “Get your sleep!” Guess what? Mom is right! Sleep is crucial for our bodies and minds to operate properly. Making sure you stay hydrated, get enough sleep and eat healthy meals will help your mental focus more than that cup of Java in the morning. 😊 Make sure you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night. This will ensure you are performing at your best.

On behalf of myself, and everyone at ICAN we wish you a wonderful school year!
