Many Haven't File the FAFSA Yet - Here's a Step-by-Step

Trends across the nation at colleges and universities have shown a sharp decrease in FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) completion compared to last year.

The FAFSA form, as we have mentioned so many times before in blogs, our tip of the week, and other communication to you as students/families is what gets the whole ball rolling to see what a student qualifies for in not only Federal Aid but also State and Institutional money.

While these trends are alarming, they are hardly surprising due the pandemic and lets just say general instability of the whole 2020 year.

At ICAN we have NOT seen a drop in our “office” appointments (which are mostly virtual) but there have been other Fill Out the FAFSA events including FAFSA Ready Iowa events that have not been able to take place this year as they have in the past .

One way to combat this drop in the state of Iowa is getting information out to families virtually through webinars and Facebook Live events.

Last week, ICAN, along with Iowa College Aid, held a FAFSA Step By Step presentation broadcast on both of our Facebook pages. We went through the FAFSA line by line with screen shots and took questions as we went along. The idea was to give people an idea of what the FAFSA looked like so when they go in to fill it out themselves it will be familiar to them. They could even fill it out as they went along.

This pandemic has made us think of new ways to help students/families. Hope this is one of them that will help you if you still need to fill out the FAFSA form.
