First and foremost, it’s really important to assume everyone has access to your profile. Did you know there have been students who have been denied access to a college they were accepted to because of something they posted on social media?! Students need to understand the seriousness of this topic. It can also affect your future career in a negative way. Such as, landing a future job. I have personally known students who have been denied acceptance to a college because of what they have posted on social media.
We recommend students do the following:
- Assume EVERYONE has access to your profile. Don’t discuss things you wouldn’t want parents, teachers, future employers, and law enforcement to know about. Set your profile to “private” to gain as much control as possible over who has access to your information.
- Use Discretion. Be careful about what photos and information you are posting to your personal page. How will the community, your parents, college officials and potential employers feel about your post?
- Assume the worst. Don’t put anything on social media that you wouldn’t want anyone to gain access to. It is important to remember there are social predators that utilize social media to find you and gain personal information about you.
- You are responsible for your content. You are the only one in charge of your profile. You can be held responsible for inappropriate content. Schools across the country are revising policies to allow disciplinary action for online behavior- so behave.
Make sure you think before you post. If it’s something you wouldn’t want your future boss to see, you shouldn’t post it. Stay aware, friends! #BeAwareOfWhatYouPost
