VolunteerIowa.org lists available volunteer opportunities that can be done remotely.
How about becoming a pen pal for nursing home residents. Most retirement communities are limiting the numbers of non-essential visitors to decrease chances of infection. In order to help these individuals stay connected, administrators are suggesting sending cards, letters and checking up on residents via electronic means if appropriate. For example, Pillar of Cedar Valley will pair you with a resident to correspond with.
If you are into crafting, think about making masks at home for medical centers to support the infection prevention efforts. Mary Greeley Medical Center is now accepting donations of homemade masks. The volunteer post includes a list of supplies, pattern instructions and locations to drop off the masks.
Adam Lounsbury, Executive Director of Volunteer Iowa said “Volunteer needs still exist during this time of social distancing.” “While the health and safety of Iowans is of the utmost priority, we can still help each other during this challenging time.”
