The Importance of Finding a Mentor

You might be wondering, “Why do I need a mentor? I seem to have made it this far without one...” I remember thinking the same thing until I hit my first year of college. I can recall the exact moment where I realized that I needed a mentor in my life.

I was about a month into college, and I realized that I had no idea how to study. Now, you might be thinking that sounds kind of crazy. You might even be thinking to yourself, “You mean, she didn’t know how to perform as simple of a task as studying?” I will be the first to admit that I did not spend a whole lot of time studying in high school. When college hit, I realized studying was a very necessary step in order to pass my classes. Therefore, I literally had to teach myself how to study. That might sound really silly, but it’s the truth!

I remember someone telling me in middle school that everyone should have a mentor in their life. That has always stuck with me. A mentor can be anyone you can really trust to motivate you and guide you. I luckily ran across several great mentors throughout my time at college. Those were the people who encouraged me to chase my dreams, not give up when the going got tough, and to put the hard work into not only studying and passing my classes, but to enjoy learning as a whole. After all, learning is a lifelong journey. As I sit here typing, I am very blessed to still have mentors in my life. Those are the people who make me better at my job by encouraging me and challenging me to do better every day.
