Creating & Managing Your FSA ID

If you are a high school senior and you’re planning to file the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need to set up a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). The FSA ID is used to log in to the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and other Federal Student Aid websites.

There are two websites where you can create and manage your (FSA ID). The original website is https://fsaid.ed.gov. This website is exclusively for creating and managing FSA IDs, and after you enter the website, you have two main options: You can either select Create an FSA ID, or you can select Manage My FSA ID.

The FSA ID can also be accessed on the Federal Student Aid website: http://studentaid.gov. This site offers multiple levels of information and options, and you can create your FSA ID by selecting the Create Account hyperlink, which links to: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch. If you already have an FSA ID, you can select the Log In hyperlink, which links to: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing.

If you happen to get locked out of your FSA ID, I would recommend using the https://fsaid.ed.gov website to manage your FSA ID. I have noticed two instances where someone was locked out of their FSA ID and could not log in to: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing, but they were able to log in to: https://fsaid.ed.gov. From there, they were able to make corrections to their FSA ID.

Here’s another thing to keep in mind. Students filing the FAFSA will have to answer dependency questions. The dependency questions determine if a student needs to provide parent information on the FAFSA. Here is an info link with more information about dependency status: https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/dependency. Dependent students will need to have one parent sign their FAFSA, and that parent will also need to have an FSA ID in order to electronically sign the student’s FAFSA.
