Federal Loan Deferment Ends January 31st

In April of 2020 the Federal Department of Education decided to defer everyone’s student loan payments and stop the interest from accruing for those who were in college. This is coming to an end on January 31st. Starting in February, student loan payments will start to be collected once again and if you’re in college, your unsubsidized Stafford student loans will start to accrue interest once again.

If you’re experiencing financial hardship and will not be able to resume payments, you need to get in contact with your loan servicer and ask about options, such as loan deferment or income based repayment options. If you don’t know who is serving your loans, you can find out by going to www.studentaid.gov. You will need your FSA ID and password to login. There’s a “Manage Loans” tab; you can get the name and contact information of your loan servicer. If you don’t remember your FSA ID you can reset the password by going to www.fsaid.ed.gov.
