Campus Visits

Even though it doesn’t feel like Spring in January, colleges and universities Spring Semesters are beginning. With most institutions back in session, now is a good time for Sophomore and Junior students in high school to plan some college visits.

The Campus Visit is taking the college/university for a test drive. Before you buy a car, you are going to take it for a test drive to make sure it runs properly and has all the features you need. Students need to think about the Campus Visits in the same way.

As a parent of a high school Junior, last week I was scanning the colleges’ websites that my son is interested in to find out what dates this Spring they are having Campus Visits. Almost all colleges now will have sign-ups on line for their Campus Visit Days. We are planning on visiting 2-3 colleges.

During these visits we are going to be able to take a tour of campus, talk with Admissions reps, get Financial Aid information and talk with professors in the majors of interest.

Besides touring the campus, it is also a good idea to take some time to tour the community the college/university is in to get a feel for that as well. The community is going to become the new home for the student while they are at the college/university. It is important to feel comfortable in the community as well as the college/university.

We really want students to make Campus Visits while school is in session if possible. You will get the truest idea of what the college is like when students step on the campus as college freshman. But some students might be looking at colleges far away and just can’t make a campus visit to some schools. If you are a student/family in that situation you can still visit college fairs, talk to alumni and most colleges now have virtual campus tours on their websites too.
