10 Tips for College Bound Seniors (Class of 2018)

  1. Contact prospective colleges and find out the name of your assigned admissions counselor.  Your admissions counselor can answer many of your questions.
  2. Update your Activities Resume.  An Activities Resume can be a useful resource for completing college admissions and scholarship applications.  If you need to start one download a template at www.icansucceed.org/activityresume.
  3. Submit college applications early in your senior year.  If applicable, apply for housing.  Depending on your college choice, you may be required to pay fees and deposits.  Be aware of deadlines.
  4. Submit required admissions documents and complete admissions requirements:  high school transcripts, prior college transcripts, Advanced Placement scores, standardized test scores, and institutional placement tests.
  5. Follow-up with your assigned admissions counselor regarding your admissions status and potential institutional scholarship opportunities.
  6. Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) for you and one parent:  www.icansucceed.org/fsaid
Write down and remember (FSA ID) emails, usernames, and passwords.
  7. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before your college's priority financial aid deadline.  The 2018-2019 FAFSA is available October 1, 2017.  Visit www.icansucceed.org/whattobring to download a list of documents you'll need to file the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
  8. Need help filing the FAFSA?
  9. Follow-up with your college's financial aid office regarding your financial aid award status.  Ask questions for clarification.  Review and accept your financial aid award.
  10. Follow-up with your admissions counselor with questions before attending college orientation.
Best wishes for a successful senior year and beyond!
